You on Crack DL? Nah, just kidding. The only thing keeping me from giving the 9.4 was the CBC's on the spine and the the lengthwise crease on the back, probably due production.

Hey Beyonder,
Do you agree with the grade of that CGC 9.2? Just curious what with the multiple, although very small, stress lines along the spine....

I bought that book pre-slabbed, and was extremely disappointed when it arrived. I can't stand spine stress, and would give that book a grade of no more than 8.5

The Rule is suppose to be, if you hold the book arms length away from you and you get the impression that it could be a new book it is in the 8.0-10. Category. Then you grade off from there. The IF 1 has very nice, bright colors. The corners are sharper than a 9.0 book. So, it could 9.2-9.6. Deduct point for defects from there. It easily moves out of 9.6 territory(due to the corners) into 9.2-9.4 range. At 9.4, I expect there to almost no CBC's. So, we are at 9.2. That's how I come to a grade. The lowest the book could possible go is 8.5 but the colors on this book look especially bright. The CBC's minor. So, 9.2!!

That is what I thought you would say, and I agree with you. I was surprised to see that book, as nice as it is, to have a NM- 9.2 label.

Sorry, got that out of Gerber Photo-Journal. I consider the rule for determining initial grade range. I should have qualified that as My Rule, not The Rule.

I happen to agree with Ernie's statement that comics should not be graded by a micrscope, but should be held at arms length. Unfortunaley books are now graded with a microscope.

My belief is that you start at arms lenghth and get closer. The only reason, in my opinion, to use a microscope is for grades 9.6 and up. And then, 9.6 could probably done by eye. Now, if you are checking for resto, that's a totally different matter.

Arms length? That has to be one of the stupidiest things I have heard. Remind me not to buy a book from you.

This is to determine initial grade. After all if a book doesn't look new at arm's length, it will not make VF and up. Initial reactions help. Then you get in depth with the grade. Look over the pages, page quality, quality of production etc. A book does indeed get judged by its cover, when being graded.

Both NM9.2s (I like the natural book just a little more than the slabbed one) - great stuff

I'd grade the non-slabed one at a 9.5.
