Archives & Masterworks
      #22519 - Sat Feb 18 2006 08:47 PM

Anyone here purchasing any of the Archives or Masterworks?

I recently bought a few Archives: Wonder Woman 1,2&3, Doctor Solar 1,2&3, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents 1 and from Marvel the Marvel Comics/Mystery Comics variant edition. Some good reading for way less than the originals would cost.

I've been wondering about all the different versions of the Masterworks, are the variants (guilded picture frame covers) the most sought after or are there some of the regular picture frame issues that are prized collectibles?

Much of my comic buying as of late has been primararly the DC Archives, concentrating heavilly on the Golden Age series. Same with the Masterworks ( I own all except the CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS masterworks).

I have a few of the silver age masterworks and also the first hardcover reprinting of Captain America 1-10......the one with the......um....er.....embarassing Bucky artwork.

Apparently the colorist was working late hours and hadn't gotten paid so he drew in a little "extra" artwork in one frame of a story..........not PG.

3 Shazam!(This should be Captain Marvel) Archives. They are alright, I suppose. There are much extensive Archives on Plastic Man. Which, I find a shame, actually.

What do you mean in the second sentence. Do you find it odd that there are more Plastic Man archives than Cpt Marvel? Is that what you mean? If you wonder about my opinion, I was glad to sell you those Shazam! archives at a low price and I kept my Plastic Man archives. There is no doubt in my mind which has lasting appeal. You really ought to check the Plas work from the library maybe. Heck, you even right now admitted that the Shazam!'s were "alright" and I'll agree. Nice to read but nothing to come back and re-read.

Now if you meant something else, please let us know.

The Early Whiz and Captain Marvels (Which are the first 50 or so). Were passable reads. The stories get better latter in each of the series. So, really, there should be as many books. Again, DC trying to keep down "The World's Mightiest Mortal".

I'm with you, Timulty! It obvious that DC is trying to keep down the world's mightiest mortal by their lack of even one Popeye archive.

Why would DC publish a Popeye archive? Isn't that King's syndicate? And by the way, Popeye is strong to the finish cause he eats his spinich(sp?). So, Popeye is not the World's Mightiest Mortal!

Popeye's as much a mortal as the big red cheese!

The Popeye Archive was just a

But "The World's Mightiest Mortal" isn't Popeye's Title. "The Sailor Man" is. He is probably The world's mightiest sailor man but that is about it.

Y'know Timulty, when you look at it the CAPTAIN MARVEL strip didn't really start getting interesting until the mid 1940's. Particularly with the visits to many great American cities and the Mr. Mind serial. The same could easily apply to the FLASH and GREEN LANTERN strips of the Golden Age.

And that is my point. About issue 18 of Whiz and up the stories are much better. So, why hasn't DC put out more archives? Answer, it isn't a character that they want to get more popular. It's a conspiracy dammit.

I got sidetracked....sorry. I love the Archives, the Masterworks are better now that they've moved into the Golden Age. I've seen the Silver stuff since I started collecting, but the GA stuff is a lot of fun! I just hope Marvel keeps it up!

I'm wishing for the first 82 issues of Journey into Mystery but will settle for the first few Tales to Astonish.
