It's a cool looking book, but what's the significance?

It a hobby, it's supposed to be fun, right?

It's one of two pulps featuring The Black Hood......who is better known for his comic book appearances in MLJ Comics.

It's rare to have a cross-over from pulp to comics: there are the Ka-zar the Great pulps, which make Ka-zar the first Timely character to ever see print (even before Sub-Mariner in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1.)

Thanks for the info! I'd like it (now) but it's too rich for me.....

I would like one too, but its already at Guide price so I'm betting it goes 1.5X or more. You've either got to be a MLJ completist or really just want the book bad now.

... Or trying to buy all pulps on the newsstands in March 1942 and this being a Quarterly as issue 1 came out in November 1941, this would qualify By the way, the books are listed in indicia as Vol. 3 # 1 and Vol. 3 # 2. What title were they carried over from? Do you know? I'll have to check.

I will look when I get home. It is carried over from a different title, but I don't recall which.

I've got it. Get ready this is confusing.

The book starts as

Detective Yarns for 11 issues from June 1938 to April 1941 then becomes
Black Hood Detective for 1 issue in September 1941 to become
Hooded Detective for 2 issues to become
Crack Detective for 44 issues (last is Sept 1949) to then become
Famous Detective Stories for 35 issues (last is Oct 1956) where it transforms into
Crack Detective & Mystery Stories for 4 issues until July 1957 when thankfully it ends!!!

And you thought following Atlas numberings was bad!

Well, now we know. Ended at $312 with bidding from some usual pulp dealer suspects. The book seems to be on its way to OK as we speak.

Sold for a pretty decent price. I wonder what one would sell for at a pulp con. I've seen books on ebay sell on both ends of the spectrum, sometimes very cheaply & sometimes way over fair market value.
