So, I'm about 3/4 of the way through "Judgment at Nuremberg." That Max Schmell? guy playing the defense attorney is an amazing actor. I can't believe I've never seen this! What a cast! Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, a very young looking Bill Shatner, and even a small role by Judy Garland!
Hey Kelso, you seen this one?

I definately have seen it! I'm planning on either taping it the next time it's on or just getting a DVD copy of it. I really thought that director Stanley Kramer really outdid himself on this film.

It's a very powerful film. When Tracy visited Burt Lancaster's character in jail at the the end, Burt said "I never knew about those millions being killed. I never knew it would come to that" and Tracy said "It came to that the moment you first sentenced an innocent man to die".
Great film! Hard to believe how bad Spencer Tracy looked at 61 years old! All those years of drinking must've been hard on him.

Like Rod Steiger and Carroll O'Connor, Tracey was one of those guys that was born looking old.
Carroll O'Conner was in his mid 40s (less than 10 years older than me) when he started as Archie in All in the Family. Yet, he looked old enough to be my grandfather. maybe it was the gray/white hair.
Look at Casey Stengel. He looked like he was 75 when he was 50.
I don't know if it was the hairstyles, clothes or what, but people almost always looked "older" than their actual years back then.

I did a little reading on Spencer Tracy and found out that Louis B. Mayer was a bit peeved when Irving Thalberg brought Spencer Tracy to MGM. Mayer initially only saw Tracy as a galoot in the mold of Wallace Beery due to Tracy's looks. Fortunately Tracy's sucess proved Mayer wrong - and Thalberg right - big time.
Incicdently, my favorite films starring Spencer Tracy are FURY, BOYS TOWN, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, THE SEVENTH CROSS, FATHER OF THE BRIDE, BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK, and JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG among others. Of the films he did with Katherine Hepburn; ADAM'S RIB, PAT AND MIKE, WITHOUT LOVE, and WOMAN OF THE YEAR.

The wife and I watched his very last film two nights ago, "Guess who's coming to dinner".
Didn't care for it.

That's surprising. It's a good film considering the time it was made. And Spencer gave a great performance. He was nominated for, but didn't get an oscar for this role. Too bad it was his last.

Didn't he do Guess Who's Comming to Dinner with Hepburn as well?

Yes, she was in it as well. Watching it in 2006 isn't as controversial as it probably was in 1967. Spencer Tracy is one of my favorite all-time actors, and he did just fine in the movie - I just didn't care for the script.
It was neat to see a much younger "Weezee" Jefferson though!

BTW Shawn, have you've been checking out what TCM has been putting on in between the films they show. They manage to show quite a few impressive shorts and cartoons as part of their "One Reel Wonders" series. To me, those shorts were part of the pleasures of viewing TCM.

This month, I'm checking out TCM's Summer Under the Stars in which each day, TCM devotes its programming to the movies featuring the star that is being honored that day. They started it of with a day of movies featuring Angela Lansbury.

You know, she is an actress that is always underrated. Great singing voice, acting and very versatile. Do you know, if she ever won any academy awards(I know she won a tony or two)?

Actually Timulty, Angela Lansbury was nominated at least three times to my knowledge for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (for the the films GASLIGHT, THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GREY, and THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) and lost all the times she was nominated. I think she also recieved an Emmy nomination or two as well.

Does anyone know if Plan 9 From Outer Space is ever shown on television? What channel would it be on - SciFi? I can't imagine it being a Turner Classic. I was reminded of it on a recent episode of Seinfeld on TBS. It's the worst movie ever made. Surely, someone would be showing it sometime.

I'm watching "Dark Victory" with Bette Davis / Ronald Reagan / Bogart. It's an excellent film; I can't believe how great of an actress Davis is! It's a pretty good story too... Ronald Reagan sure was a good looking SOB when he was young!

You ever see Ralph Bellamy when he was young? Or Don Amiche for that matter. That when a lead actor, actually looked like they could pick up a bar full of chicks and take them home for a "Private Party" if you know what I mean.

Y'know Timulty, after watching the films THAT NIGHT IN RIO and HEAVEN CAN WAIT, I can easily believe that about Don Ameche.

Actually, look at pics of Hume Cronyn as well. You would be surprised how different he looked. Time does funny things to people.

I've been watching TCM's Summer Under the Stars tribute to Ann Sothern and I'm really starting to be impressed by her as an actress. She was a much better actress, comediene, and performer than people gave her credit for. I've just finished watching her in MAISIE WAS A LADY. I wonder what any of you thought of Ann Sothern?

Actually, seems like actors and actresses back then we really good, compared to the talent pool currently out there. Too many good looking people and not enough real actors. In this day and age, do you think Chuck Lorrey or Charles Laughton would be able to have a career on the Big Screen, I think not.

When you think about it, Hollywood's golden era was also a golden era for character actors. Not only did such character actors as James Gleason, William Demerest, Edward Everett Horton, and Alan Hale, Sr. (not to mention on the distaff side such actresses as Margaret Hamilton, Marjorie Main, and Billie Burke) among many others were not only getting steady work in films at that time; some of them managed to become major stars in their own right. Among those character people who became majors stars included such lumineries as Charles Laughton, Paul Muni, Lionel Barrymore, Edward G. Robinson, Boris Karloff, Wallace Beery, and Marie Dressler. One might also put Lon Chaney, Sr. in this group as well.
These days, the character actor is very much a dying breed. Other than such people as Billy Bob Thorton, John Goodman, or even Rosie O'Donnell who ocasionally appear on the scene, there are no real character actors in today's movies.

Today, I've been taping the short subject marathon that TCM has been broadcasting. They've been playing more than quite a few vintage shorts from such directors as George Stevens, Jean Negulesco, Fred Zimmerman, and Don Siegel among others. And quite a few of them were from the Hal Roach studios.
