Good Lord! Who does this guy know at CGC to get a 9.4 on a raggety-azz, sunburned "VF"?

Seven years later, the whole concept of buying a number on a label regardless of how rag-tag, how drastically and deliberately overgraded the book under the label is, continues. I'm convinced that the label-whores take no pride in ownership of the comic itself. As if the comic itself doesn't even have to be included with the label. As though the label means something in and of itself. I'm positive that the Kingpins of the hobby could have set up their grading service not to encapsulate comics, but simply to churn out labels, slab only the labels, a title and grade, and the hobbyists would have turned out in the same droves to buy the labels alone. Like the US Mint issues paper that represents something unseen. CGC could have issued one blue label AF 15 NM+ label, and sold that for $150K. Five AF 15 NM labels and sold those for $75K. Ten AF 15 NM- labels, and sold those for $37.5K. Well, you get the idea. Based on what I've seen people pay for artificial grades that have absolutely no basis in fact in representing the book below the label, I have no doubt that the labels alone, without the comics, would have done just as well.

That book looks more like a 4.9 to me. If any thinks that book is a 9.4, I've got a little bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell him.

I saw a book with Marvel Chipping just like that one and it got a 9.2. It ultimately comes down to buyer. I have a couple that would grade out lower because of production issues in my opinion.

And my only advice to potential buyers is Caviat emptor; let the buyer beware. A lot of those people who selling comic books these days have the scruples of used car salesmen. The best defense against them is an educated consumer or a very knowledgeable collector.
