It was a great time, with Steranko experimenting with cinema- and surrealism-inspired imagery, Joe Sinnott and Jack Kirby producing steriod laced artwork, John Buscema flexing his muscles and his ability to draw the human form, and Gene Colan's work on Daredevil.
I can still remember how stunned I was when Neal Adams took over the X-Men for a short run in the 1960's. All of a sudden, a book that I had been buying on and off and was never that interesting, became a must buy! It was just another notch in Marvel's belt to have gotten such a great artist to breathe life into a struggleing title.
Buying, collecting and rereading those wonderful books affected me so strongly that I eventually became a professional illustrator. I've never felt I was naturally talented (or fast) enough to churn out comic book pencils, but over the years I've worked the silver age imagery mine to produce magazine and advertising illustration, and it's been very satisfying. I can honestly say that if it wasn't for the Marvel Age, I might easily have been working another trade.
I feel very fortunate to have been able to walk to the candystore and pick through late sixties Marvels fresh from the distributor. Those memories will stay with me. That's why my 51 year old heart still quickens when I see those covers, no matter how many times I spot them.

I can totally relate with the excitement of the day back then. My 49 year old heart hears ya! I remember asking the drugstore what day comics were delivered and what time of day........then getting a look of "WTF does this kid need to know that carp for?"..........then I'd show up every week at that time, work my way thru the spinner rack, looking for the Marvel Logo on the books and pulling the sweetest copies I could find.....all 8 of them......then pay for them & the tax with my dollar bill.
Pick up some chewing gum and a couple of root beers on the way home & then hit the couch for some reading. :cloud9

I'm a bit older but I don't remember paying tax on comics back then. It seems to me that there was no taxes on periodicals. I remember buying ten for a dollar. Boy those were the days.

We had tax then in Florida (1965-69) and, if I remember corredtly, it was something like 4%. anyway, on 8 .12cent comics it worked out at $1.00.
What state were you buying your books in back then? pcorn

must have been great! I didn't start collecting books until 1983 so I missed the silver age when I was a kid! But I remember back in the early/mid 70's the old man used to sit me down on his knee and read action/superman comics to me! Those were the days!!!

Howdy, new guy in the house.
Nothing defines Silver Age more for me than those fantastic Steranko covers in the late sixties. Nick Fury 6 still does it for me. I have several copies. Every now and then my wife catches me taking a deep sniff of the book and walks away shaking her head. Once I made her smell it. She wrinkled her nose and asked what the smell was from. I said, "history, baby." Chicks just don't get it.

Well hello Grails! Good to see another new member sign up and start posting!
Chicks will never get our passion about comic books; I've given up on that years ago! My wife doesn't give me too hard of a time about spending money on them, so all is good.

Well, only about two years late... but here is my latest Green River. I actually traded another Greenie to get this, but it was a duplicate. Very pleased with it, as I started collecting Marvels with ASM #41 back in 1966.
